Why This Expansion Matters

Our hatchery expansion in Stephenville will allow us to increase and improve the production of farmed Atlantic salmon in this province using Atlantic Canadian broodstock to supply our licensed sea farms on the south coast of Newfoundland. This expansion, and the improvements in our technology in our land-based hatchery in Stephenville hatchery will help us grow and improve our marine operation based in Harbour Breton.

A Strong Track Record

Mowi Canada East has already invested over 80 million dollars in the local economy of Newfoundland and Labrador over the last 6 years in new infrastructure built at the Indian Head salmon hatchery in Stephenville, NL. We’re ready to invest more, but we need your help to move forward.

Why we need your support. Now.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador asked us to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to complete the current expansion work. You can review the EIS on https://www.gov.nl.ca/ecc/projects/project-1975/

Minister Reid,

I fully support the expansion of the Stephenville (Indian Head) hatchery and the increase in production from 4.5 million to 6.7 million salmon per year.

This project represents a meaningful opportunity for economic growth in Newfoundland and Labrador. The EIS as presented is extremely comprehensive and illustrates that the expansion is of high importance to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador! The environmental risk has been demonstrated to be low through baseline studies and effects modelling.

I appreciate the opportunity to be able to provide comments on the Stephenville Hatchery Expansion (Project Reg 1975).
