Colorectal cancer is affecting more Canadians at a younger age. By lowering the screening age, we can prevent many more cancer diagnoses and ultimately save thousands of lives in Canada
Colorectal Cancer Canada is calling on all provinces and territories to begin screening for colorectal cancer at 45 years old, now.

Why Screening at 45 Matters
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common and deadly cancers in Canada. While it has traditionally been associated with older adults, rates among people under 50 are rising.
Even though colorectal cancer may be prevented, and is 90% curable when caught early, it has now become the deadliest cancer in men and the second deadliest in women aged 20 to 49 in Canada.
The problem is simple, and serious. Many Canadians are diagnosed after symptoms appear. By then, the cancer is often more advanced.
Screening saves lives. Lowering the screening age to 45 is a practical, evidence-based step that can reduce late diagnoses and improve outcomes.
What We’re Asking For
We are calling on provincial governments to:
- Review current colorectal cancer screening guidelines
- Lower the screening age to 45 for average-risk individuals
- Ensure equitable access to screening across provinces and territories
This change has the potential to save thousands of lives over time. It can also reduce long-term strain on the healthcare system.
Now is the time for everyone impacted by colorectal cancer - patients, caregivers, loved ones, and healthcare professionals - to make their voices heard.
What you can do!
Write a letter to your local MP and share why lowering the colorectal cancer screening age is so important to you. Your personal story can highlight the urgency of this issue and help ensure it is taken seriously by decision-makers.
By speaking out, we can rally MPs across the country, giving this campaign the political momentum it needs to drive real meaningful change.
If you or a loved one has faced colorectal cancer between the ages of 45 and 50: be sure to highlight why early screening in this age group is so vital.
