I'm writing as your constituent about Ontario's upcoming decision on new nuclear reactors.
The Energy for Generations plan calls for up to 17,800 megawatts of new nuclear, and the reactor we build will power this province for generations.
To me, the choice is obvious: we should build our own, we should build CANDU.
CANDU is ours. Canadians designed it,
Canadians build it, and Canadians fuel it, with uranium that's mined, refined, and made into fuel without ever leaving the country. Our energy should depend on Canada, and no one else.
There's more reasons why:
The CANDU supply chain includes over 250 Canadian companies and supports more than 76,000 jobs.
Of the $3 billion in recent CANDU purchase orders, 90% went to Canadian suppliers, including $1.8 billion to Ontario companies.
CANDU runs on natural uranium, so our fuel never depends on foreign enrichment.
Ontario's CANDU fleet supplies about half the world's cobalt-60, used to treat cancer and sterilize medical equipment.
CANDU has powered Ontario reliably for over 50 years.
Generations of Ontarians will rely on the power these reactors produce. What's on the other end should answer to Canadians, and Canadians alone.
I urge you to press the government to keep our energy future in Canadian hands.
